Built in 1814 by Sen. Richard Southgate, the Southgate House is one of Newport, KY's most famous landmarks, not to mention an amazing place to see a live concert.
Underbelly and the historic Southgate House are a perfect match. What better place to see the city’s strangest comedy show than at the most respected music venue in the region?
A National Historic Landmark constructed in 1814 by Sen. Richard Southgate, the Southgate House has hosted plenty of famous guests throughout its storied past, including President Lincoln, and is perhaps best known for being the childhood home of Brig. Gen. John Tariaferro Thompson, inventor of the Tommy Gun. Younger generations know Southgate House as the premier live music venue in greater Cincinnati, as it regularly hosts bands such as Guided By Voices, The Misfits, Reverend Horton Heat, The White Stripes, and The Decemberists as well as cutting edge comedians like David Cross, Neil Hamburger and Eugene Mirman.
Underbelly is held upstairs in the Southgate House’s Parlour, arguably the best performance space in the building. Audience members who arrive early enough can grab a seat on one of three padded church pews or sit at a table near the back of the room. The Parlour has a bar stocked with an expansive and reasonably priced selection of beer and liquor.
Thanks to the unwavering support Southgate House has shown the cast and crew of Underbelly ever since the show’s inception, we’re proud to share our “Best Comedy Show of 2009” award with them and hope to win many more awards in the future!
